The starlings are back!
This is the time of year when we see huge increases in the local starling population, and there’s no better place than the Radnor Fforest, to experience the giant swirling masses returning to their roost on Landegley Rhos. In the late afternoon, you could easily find yourself in the midst of a vast chattering cloud making its way home at the end of a long day’s foraging. Recent counts estimate that as many as 300,000 Starlings descend upon Landegley Rhos at dusk each day, arriving from every direction.
The best place to see the magnificent murmurations is on Landegley Rhos itself, at dusk, but the top of the Radnor Forest offers an excellent vantage point from which to observe their passage from all directions.
Although a proportion will remain here throughout the year, most leave in the Spring to breed, and return in the Autumn from northern Europe to spend the winter in the UK because the milder weather enables them to find food and shelter much more easily.
