Radnor Forest
Radnor Forest is an expanse of open moorland, wooded valleys and farmland in the old Welsh county of Radnorshire, which rises to its highest point in Rhos Fawr (2,165ft). Black Mixen, a large peat bog plateau with its peak marked by a Bronze Age cairn is a wonderful place to walk and enjoy the beautiful views of the countryside that have hardly changed in centuries. In the steep wooded valleys and beside the waterways are homesteads that date back hundreds of years. Wildlife in the region is plentiful; Merlin and Red Grouse, Curlews, Red Kites, Tree Pipits, Hares, Foxes, Badgers and more. Read more >>
We love this special place and want to protect it now and into the future.
Our Mission
We want to bring our community and visitors together, to celebrate and preserve this landscape and way of life. We want to form a group that works to promote what we have here. We also want to act to protect this place by acting as a united front, discussing plans and acting if we feel the region is under threat.
The Future
As with many other precious areas of unspoilt upland in Mid wales, the Radnor Forest has for many years been viewed by developers as a site for wind turbines. In the past two years, a company has been negotiating with landowners to sign over the development rights on a large part of this land. Their aim seems to be to create a giant "Energy Park" from the Radnor Forest to the hills south of Newtown. The Radnor Forest was deliberately not included as a potential site in the Welsh Government's 20-year plan - the National Development Framework (NDF). The final draft of that document was laid before the Senedd in Cardiff on 21st September 2020 for a 6-week consideration, and the Radnor Forest remains outside the identified area. However, it is very likely that the attempt to industrialise this highly valued area of tranquillity will continue, with the help of lobbyists in Cardiff. It is vital that we do all we can to protect the Forest and confine renewable energy projects to truly appropriate locations.
